Birthday Bits & Bobs
My 23rd birthday came and went on the 20th without much fanfare or celebrations involving more than 5 people at a time and much cake.
23 feels like such an insignificant age and number to be at, but there is nothing insignificant about the good life I've been enjoying since Day 1. It's terribly hard to be grateful about life when you feel that you aren't doing much to be grateful enough, so I try not to dwell on it.
Birthday presents were few and far between this year too, but what little I did receive are more than enough, knowing that much thought, deliberation and (hopefully) love has been put into them to give me something that I would actually want/use. I still have random birthday presents from previous years sitting unused on a shelf in my room somewhere, and I'm pleased to say that the presents I've received this year will be doing the exact opposite of that.
Something worth noting down is the the dramatic decrease of SMS/phone calls I've received to wish me happy birthday this year, but my Facebook wall and Twitter exploded. Hooray for teh interwebz!
For some special birthday noms, David tried (most successfully much to my surprise) to whisk me off to an unknown destination for dinner. Said unknown destination turned out to be Jalan Telawi in Bangsar (I'll feign unknowing-ness) and a quaint German restaurant down the street called House Frankfurt. It's the sort of joint that I've walked past without a second glance because every other shop in Bangsar is just this sort of place - dim lighting, wooden chairs and tables spilling onto the sidewalk threatening to knock your kneecaps off and plenty of white people with a lager in hand.
It wasn't very crowded because I presume not many people celebrate their birthdays on a Monday, but we managed to get a cosy little booth amidst lots of old black-and-white photos of soldier-ly looking people on the walls.
We helped ourselves to a huge and juicy pork knuckle with delightfully crunchy skin on top that threatened our arteries the minute we dared to look at it in the eye. So good. So crunchy. So chewy. So awesome at a special price because Mondays are pork knuckle nights at House Frankfurt. Score!
It was just like any other dinner night that we've shared with nonsensical topics and feeling awkward together in new surroundings. And I'm not complaining because it'll feel like I'm celebrating something with him every day then. What a bonus!
I'm a year older and none the wiser. Not sure if it's going to improve this time next year, but I shall remain optimistic!!
P.S. Will be posting up pictures from one of my birthday presents this year soon. Massive amounts of excitement in store!
